No food police needed

At any given time, there are approximately 10,000 food “rules” running through my mind: Drink 64 oz. of water a day. Eat 9 servings of fruit and vegetables. Eat whole grains. Avoid sweets. Avoid fats. Eat lots of soy. Don’t eat trans fats. Don’t eat fast food. Avoid fried foods. Don’t drink soda. Don’t eat foods and drinks made with artificial sweeteners. Don’t eat red meat. It takes more calories to chew celery than it has in it. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Avoid fats that are solid at room temperature. Don’t eat movie theater popcorn. Green veggies are healthier than white veggies. Don’t eat pizza with cheese and meat. Avoid caffeine. Don’t eat too much seafood (mercury). Don’t eat eggs. Eat eggs every day. Drink a glass of wine every day. Choose olive oil. Don’t eat processed foods. Eat blueberries (antioxidants). Don’t use too much salt. Drink orange juice (folic acid). Don’t eat dairy. Eat nuts before dinner. Don’t eat veal. Avoid organ meats. Eat yogurt with active cultures. Don’t eat chips.

And now that I am banded, I can add a few more: Chew food 30 times before swallowing. Don’t drink for 30 minutes after meals. Watch out for high calorie drinks that can sabotage weight loss. Watch out for bread, pizza, bagels, hot dogs and other foods that aren’t band-friendly. Eat at least 50 grams of protein a day. Eat no more than 3 meals a day. Don’t eat more than a cup and a half of food per meal. Eat protein first. Take a daily multi-vitamin. Don’t eat “sliders”. Take small bites.

So with all this information in my mind at any given moment, you can believe that I do not need anyone looking at what I am eating and making “helpful” comments about whether or not I “should” be eating that particular food. In fact, many a binge has been triggered by the “food police”. If there exists a food law, believe me, I am well-aware of it and do not need someone to point it out to me.

Smokers and drinkers can if they want hide away and get minimal disturbance from the cigarette and gin police, but we - we're so visible, aren't we? It's so tempting for work colleagues and partners to 'tell you what's good for you' at the very point when you're eating.
I do like the way you write, and will enjoy following your blog. Thank you for becoming a follower on mine!

Kim - My boyfriend is the worst. He has told me before that if I would just let him control my diet, I wouldn't have a weight problem. Which is just silly because he has struggled with his weight off and on as long as I've known him. He plays rugby and is a big guy and can drop 10 or 15 lbs. really quick, but whenever he tries to "diet", I'll find him making a pan of candy on about day 6. He really isn't mean about it. I think he is just kind of oblivious. I wasn't trying to come off so pissed off. Really it was all in fun!

I nominated you for an award. See my blog for details.

Too funny-I feel the same. All these "rules" are making me rebel. I'm not good with rules so ignore them most of the time (except for my new band rules). My hubby keeps asking me "can you eat that". What did he think I was going to do-prepare/order a nice meal and then just sit there and look at it! Give me a break, if I couldn't eat it, I wouldn't have it in front of me. Either that or he was hoping I would give it to him. Break the rules!!! Or make your own.

So true. I am worried once I get banded people will be watching everything I eat and counting every ounce I have (or haven't) lost. I know I shouldn't worry about it, but unfortunately I probably will.

Amanda, thanks for visiting my blog. I guess since you live in Eugene you had Dr McColl do your surgery. I really like him. I had Dr Yarbrough do mine. He was really nice too but I think Dr McColl is more in touch with Lapband patients since he is one himself. Keep up the good work and I am going to follow your blog too. :)

GREAT POST GIRLFRIEND! I made a similar post a few weeks back. See "Diet v. Lifesyle Choice" on my blog. I'm totally with you. I don't like people to think that just because I have a lapband I am one. Keep your head up though. It'll all work out. Just let everyone know that you're your own person and you know what's best for you. Let them do their thing and you do yours.
