Throwing away food

What a struggle it still is to toss food in the trash or compost!  I sit down to a meal and I want so much to eat everything on my plate.  I try so hard to dish out a realistic portion, but sometimes food comes bigger than a single Bandster portion.  And sometimes my eyes are bigger than my stomach.

Last night I made a vegetarian chicken patty on an English muffin with BBQ sauce.  It was very good and I wanted to keep eating it, but after I'd had nearly half, I knew I had to stop.  Still I hovered over the trash and thought about setting it aside for later when I could eat more.  My daughter asked if I could save it, but I knew it wouldn't taste the same as a left-over.  I knew I wouldn't be hungry later and if I saved it to eat in a few hours, I'd be defeating the whole point of the band.  So I dropped it in the trash.

I also dropped half of my Thanksgiving dinner plate in the trash with the same reluctance.  I wanted to eat more, but I knew it wouldn't go well.

Pre-band I would've always cleaned my plate.  And I usually would have refilled it at least once.  Those kind of portions just aren't possible for me anymore and I am thankful for that.  It has allowed me to lose 98.4 lbs. in 9+ months.  But it is so hard when my brain says, "Yum! Keep eating!" and my band says, "Nope. You're done!".

I long for the same experience! I has been difficult for me, growing up cleaning my plate. I realize that is no longer going to be the way to eat. I have even stopped encouraging my daughter clean her plate. I now just insist that she eat until she is full. You have achieved so much, and it is definitely an inspiration!

Agreed. So frustrating when you want to keep eating but can't. Thank goodness for our bands.

That is what I have learned since I was banded.... My MOUTH and MY STOMACH have a serious communication problem!

I know, I throw away so much, because left overs just don't work out for me. Better in the trash then on my thighs!

Wow 98.4 pounds gone ! Sometimes the best thing to do is throw it out - otherwise it will keep calling to you :)

I can't wait until it's my band that stops me from eating and not me just "knowing it's enough." I'm already telling my girls to only eat until they're done and not to worry about how much is left on the plate. We're getting to where we don't worry about wasting food in our house.

Mmm I understand completely. We're from the era where our parents made us finish everything on the plate because they'd grown up without enough food. These days, food isn't so scarce, and the idea that we HAVE to finish everything on our plate is one of the factors influencing obesity!

Yes I get frustrated when I am eating something especially yummy and I can't finish it.

Feel the same. I have so many leftovers in the fridge. I feel like I used to cook for so much and I have to get used to cooking smaller meals.

I feel the same. Lately my husband and I have started to get smart and we order an appetizer and a dinner and share that. I take my little portion and he eats what he wants. Hopefully, the leftovers are still left-over friendly...but sometimes they aren't. It's always hard to waste food...

I am right there with you sister! I come from the "clean the plate" school of thought growing up and not eating everything is still foreign to me. My husband is now my clean up crew, but he never gains the extra weight. I'm trying to get used to cooking smaller portion and trying to remember to serve myself smaller portions. It's just hard to change our ways of thinking. Good post!!

I want to say that you look fabulous in the previous post. You look like a fit and attractive woman.

Your post hits a vein with me too. I'm getting used to stopping when I'm full just like thin/healthy people do. And I'm getting used to just starting out with smaller portions. I truly didn't understand portion control till I had the band to gently and sometimes not so gently remind me.

I actually threw away a container of Kraft Mac and Cheese that was in the refrigerator for too long...can you believe that? Never in my life have I ever thrown away mac & cheese! This has been one of my favorite foods since childhood. Now a small box actually feeds our 3 person family. Pre-band, I could polish off a box by myself. If there were leftovers (like when I would make 2 boxes) - I would had them eaten within 12 hours. I'm finally getting to the point where I don' feel the need to over order at a restaurant - took me 5 months, but I finally did it. I got tired of throwing away doggie bags of food (something that would have NEVER happened pre band)

Yeah us!

This is something I struggle with the most, I think.

Um, I would never throw food away. I save leftovers religiously. I know that if I don't save leftovers I will eat it now, so I save everything and eat leftovers half the time. I would never waste food, and I would never make myself waste food, especially when I am struggling to get the food I have.
