Drinking and banding

I got drunk last night.  On a Monday.  I should say I almost never drink.  My fella is trying to get a job at a local brewery and he volunteers a lot of time there.  Last night they had an event at a local pub so we went.  I started with a beer and was very tipsy.  After an hour or so my fella asked if I wanted another and I said no.  He got me one anyway so of course I drank it.

I tried to eat to mitigate the damage.

I was seriously wasted.  On two beers.

I looked online this morning and found an article about gastric bypass and alcohol. I don't know if any of the results that they discovered can be applied to gastric banding, but basically they found that RNY patients got drunk on less alcohol and stayed drunk longer post-op.

Interesting, no?  Any thoughts?

I used to be able to drink and drink and drink before being banded. Now? One drink...and I'm toast. I had about 3/4 of a Corona last week and got buzzed! It makes for being a cheap date, but I have to seriously watch it! :)

I think would probably agree ........

I haven't had anything to drink (alcoholic)since being banded so I don't know what effect it would have on me but I had read on other blogs that it can happen that you can get drunk on very little wine, etc.,

I've noticed that I get tipsy a lot faster than I used to. I don't know the science behind it, but I know for me...I just can't eat the way I used to in order to catch up. And since I don't get as hungry, I don't snack throughout the party/night the way I used to either. That's my theory anyway.

Itoo think the small abount of food we eat has something to do with the effects of alcohol on use. A few weeks ago my hubby and went out for a drink and the had jello shots, well I had 3 of the becaous in the past they did not have much effect on me, wrong I was wasted. Not doing that agian. The strang part was I did not have a hang over the next day.

I had the gastric sleeve on 1/11/11 and have drank a couple times since - I would say absolutely I get buzzed faster and longer! Buzzed off one small glass of wine. Crazy!

I have also noticed this. i figured it was just because I don't drink like I use to, and I'm sure that is partly it, but maybe there is something to the surgery as well! interesting!

My support group has talked about this in depth. I am a bypass patient so I am not sure but from the bandsters I have talked to it is common to get wasted faster. I am a little scared to drink since I was a light weight before..

I'm not so sure that applies to the band like it does the bypass. For one, alchohol is absorbed into the bloodstream through the stomach lining and maybe even the intestines and with bypass patients their actual stomach size has been changed and is absorbed more quickly. With the band, liquids go through just as they did pre-band for the most part so it doesn't cause alcohol to be absorbed any quicker. My BFF and I both drink occasionally and there was no difference in the amount of alchohol it takes to get tipsy.

I guess everyone is different.

You know, I believe what Jess is saying, it probably has more to do with us having less food in our tummies to slow the alcohol absorption. I had two vodka tonics at the wedding last weekend and was seriously drunk. It was sorta fun.

Definitely I can't hold my liquor like I used to, but I still try!

Definitely get tipsy sooner now!

I love how the first line in this post says "I got drunk last night" - LOL. I hope the hangover isn't too bad.

I hope your hangover isn't too bad; I'd be interested to see those studies!!

Thank you Amanda for the words on my blog today- seriously you get it. I AM trying to be a perfectionist a lot of the time. I need to chill. Your words really helped me think. Thanks so much- try to nourish yourself back to health.

If you had seen me at BOOBs you would know that the band/easy drunk thing is for REAL! Okay, I can drink more than 2 beers, but not much, and definitely not on an empty stomach!

I do find the more I eat before/during cocktailing, the better I can handle the alcohol.

The band makes you drunk sooo much faster. I can not hold my liquor at all. I now just have one glass of wine and I am good for hours :o) The old saying is true, we really are cheap dates now :o)

Like others have said for bypass paitients, it is the rapid absorption into the intestines that causes issues. For Bandsters, there is no scientific basis for us to get drunker faster, but rather because we have less food on our stomachs to absorb the alcohol and slow the digestion of the alcohol itself. What I do know is that I had a Bypasss patient friend who drank like she did prior to her surgery and became a serious alcoholic. She died back in October. So yes, it is more of an issue for bypass patients.

I have never been a big drinker. When I was younger, I discovered that I needed a shitton of it to get me as loaded as some of my female friends on way less and no one wants to be the girl who can outdrink the guys, right? Well, that USED to be the case.

I have had a couple of blended drinks since being banded, no more than a couple of shots of Kahlua with chocolate ice cream type of stuff. No effect at all, other than the guilt from having an adult milkshake (calorie wise). Haven't tried other liquors though.

Many of the women from my support groups who have had gastric report not only getting quickly drunk off very little but also having dumping results from the alcohol.

I am such a cheap date now! I think it has to do with the little amount of food.
